The optical counterparts to Be/X-ray binaries in the Magellanic Clouds

چکیده
The fields of 8 X-ray sources in the Magellanic Clouds believed to be Be/X-ray binaries have been searched for possible Be star counterparts. BV Rc and Hα CCD imaging was employed to identify early type emission stars through colour indices and Hα fluxes. Spectroscopy of 5 sources confirms the presence of Hα emission in each case. Based on the positional coincidence of emission line objects with the X-ray sources, we identify Be star counterparts to the ROSAT sources RX J0032.9-7348, RX J0049.1-7250, RX J0054.9-7226 and RX J0101.0-7206, and to the recently discovered ASCA source AX J0051-722. We confirm the Be star nature of the counterpart to the HEAO1 source H0544-66. In the field of the ROSAT source RX J0051.8-7231 we find that there are three possible counterparts, each showing evidence for Hα emission. We find a close double in the error circle of the EXOSAT source EXO 0531.1-6609, each component of which could be a Be star associated with the X-ray source.

High-mass X-ray binaries in the Magellanic Clouds
We present a catalogue of high-mass X-ray binaries in the Magellanic Clouds. The catalogue lists source name(s), coordinates, apparent magnitudes, orbital parameters, and X-ray luminosity of 128 high-mass X-ray binaries, together with stellar parameters of the components, other characteristic properties and a comprehensive selection of the relevant literature. The aim of this catalogue is to pr...
متن کاملThe population of massive X - ray binaries ⋆ I . The Large Magellanic Cloud
We present high resolution blue spectroscopy of an almost complete sample of optical counterparts to massive X-ray binaries in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and derive their spectral classification. We find an spectral type B0II for the optical counterpart to RX J0532.5−6551, confirming it as the first wind-fed massive X-ray binary in the LMC. We also confirm the Be nature of the proposed co...
متن کاملA catalogue of low - mass X - ray binaries in the Galaxy , LMC , and SMC ( Fourth edition ) ⋆
Aims. The aim of this catalogue is to provide the reader with some basic information on the X-ray sources and their counterparts in other wavelength ranges (γ-rays, UV, optical, IR, and radio). Some sources, however, are only tentatively identified as low-mass X-ray binaries on the basis of their X-ray properties similar to the known low-mass X-ray binaries. Further identification in other wave...
متن کاملXMM-Newton observations of High Mass X-ray Binaries in the SMC
Based on XMM-Newton EPIC data of four pointings towards the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), results on timing and spectral analyses of 16 known high mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) and HMXB candidates in the SMC are presented. We confirm the pulse periods of four sources which were known to show pulsations. In addition, two new X-ray pulsars are discovered: XMMU J005605.2–722200 with Ppulse = 140.1 ±...
متن کاملOptical Follow-up of New SMC Wing Be/X-ray Binaries
We investigate the optical counterparts of recently discovered Be/X-ray binaries in the Small Magellanic Cloud. In total four sources, SXP101, SXP700, SXP348 and SXP65.8 were detected during the Chandra Survey of the Wing of the SMC. SXP700 and SXP65.8 were previously unknown. Many optical ground based telescopes have been utilised in the optical follow-up, providing coverage in both the red an...
